Become a Peer Educator!

Do you enjoy helping others? Are you interested in health and wellness?
Team giving each other helping hands to get up a mountain

The Health and Wellness Promotion Committee through the Division of Student Life is searching for dedicated students to become Peer Educators. Peer Educators are students that serve as leaders and role models to fellow students regarding making responsible and healthy lifestyle choices. Peer Educators assist with programming and outreach to educate students about relevant issues related to health and wellness that affect our campus community. Relevant topics include alcohol awareness, sexual assault prevention, nutrition, physical activity, safer sex and sexual health, and much more!

Some benefits of becoming a Peer Educator include getting involved on campus while helping others and improving the IUPUI community. Peer Educators receive training, leadership development, and become nationally certified as Peer Educators.

If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Emily Werner at wernere@iupui.edu or call (317) 274-9355. Applications are currently being accepted.

Suicide Prevention

Suicide is a serious public health problem that has shattered the lives of millions of people, families, and communities nationwide.

Facts about Suicide:

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, claiming more than twice as many lives each year as homicides.

More than 8 million adults reported having serious suicidal thoughts in the past year, 2.5 million people reported making a suicide plan in the past year, and 1.1 million reported a suicide attempt in the past year.

How You Can Play a Role in Preventing Suicide
WARNING SIGNS OF SUICIDAL BEHAVIORS Everyone can play a role in preventing suicide by being aware of the warning signs of suicidal behaviors:
  • Talking about wanting to die; feeling hopeless, trapped, or in unbearable pain; being a burden to others;
  • Looking for a way to kill oneself;
  • Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs;
  • Acting anxious, agitated, or reckless;
  • Sleeping too little or too much;
  • Withdrawing or feeling isolated;
  • Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge; and
  • Displaying extreme mood swings.

WHAT YOU CAN DO If you believe someone is at risk of suicide:
  • Ask them if they are thinking about killing themselves. (This will not put the idea into their heads, or make it more likely that they will attempt suicide.);
  • Call the U.S. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255);
  • Take the person to an emergency room or seek help from a medical or mental health professional;
  • Remove any objects that could be used in a suicide attempt; and
  • If possible, do not leave the person alone.

National Sleep Awareness Week

March 5th through March11th is National Sleep Awareness Week

As you are well aware, sleep is an important element of your overall health and well-being. Most adults need 7-8 hours of sleep per night and many college students don’t even come close. A lack of sleep can lead to poor performance in classes and at work. Insufficient sleep can also affect your mood resulting in irritability and is linked to troubled relationships.

Here are a few things to try to improve your night’s sleep.

Try to stick with a sleep schedule where you go to sleep up and wake up at the same time each day.

Avoid caffeine and other stimulants, which can take up to 8 hours to fully wear off.

Try to relax and unwind before bed. Stress and anxiety are a major factor contributing to lack of sleep.

Try to identify a few different stress management techniques that help you such as reading, listening to music or meditating.

Good luck and sweet dreams.

So what should you do to STAY SAFE?
